Weberian Model
Social stratification is multidimensional, based on three distinct but related dimensions:
  • Class: Economic position based on marketable skills and resources (not just ownership of production). Weber identified various classes within both the propertied and propertyless.
  • Status (Stand): Social honor, prestige, or social esteem. Status groups are communities with a shared lifestyle and sense of belonging. Status can be independent of class (e.g., a respected but poor artist).
  • Power (Party): The ability to achieve one's will despite the resistance of others. This can be organized through political parties or other groups.
